The tragedy of the Doce River - the mud, the people and the water

6 Years later

On the afternoon of November 5, 2015, one of the tailing dams of the Fundão mine, located in Mariana Brazil, suffered a catastrophic failure. The dam is under responsibility of the mining company Samarco, controlled by Vale and the anglo-Australian BHP Billiton, which has been operating since 1977 in the production of iron ore for steel production, with projects in the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.

As a tsunami, the tragedy hit the districts of Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo (municipality of Mariana) among others and caused the emergence of strange mud deserts.

Traces of a River

Two illustrators in search of stories that did not become news and the voices that were also not heard. An expedition looking for answers and meanings to one of the greatest environmental crimes in Brazil. A trip through the Doce river basin, between Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais. A journey fuelled by art and dialogue. A bitter feeling that plunges into the uncertainty of the future. And one goal: to look at the nuances of disaster and in the daily lives of ordinary people of flesh and blood as a source of inspiration to "humanize causes and resistances".

Artur Sgambatti Monteiro

Artur, graduated in Environmental Management (USP-São Paulo), is an environmentalist and illustrator focused on discussions and the evidence of socio-environmental problems. He believes in art as a fundamental means to strengthen human relations and collaborates with the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS-Potsdam). Its purpose is to add subtlety to reality, making the challenging context easier to understand, especially for those who are distant.

Vladimir Ospina Rodriguez

Vladimir is graduated in architecture (ENSA Paris-Belleville), illustrator and manager of Organika, a construction company in France . Through his work in different foreign territories, he seeks an understanding of the various strategies of the human being and his relationship with the environment. I work with the NGO Coral Guardian and in several socio-environmental projects.
